Greenhaven Homes owned by TSP construction, celebrated the remarkable achievement of Joy Tufuga, the first female trade-qualified carpenter in Levin. Joy recently completed her carpentry apprenticeship through BCITO at Greenhaven and now leads her own team.
Owner Todd Strode-Penny is committed to fostering a positive and inclusive work environment. He is dedicated to professional growth and development by investing in their employees, Greenhaven ensures a skilled and motivated workforce, setting a high standard in the construction industry.
In a celebration last week held in her honour, Joy's Uncle spoke about her determination and resilience. "Joy comes from a long line of strong-minded and determined Samoan women. She never gave up on her dream to become qualified," he said. Reflecting on her journey, he added, "She initially thought about becoming a nurse until the family had some building renovations done, and she said she could have done better herself."
Born and raised in the Samoan village of Salelologa Savai’i, Joy has always had a deep-rooted ambition to help and provide for her family. She has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for her younger siblings, whom she hopes will come to New Zealand to seek work. After caring for her grandmother with dementia for seven years until her passing, Joy decided it was time to pursue her own dreams.
Joy began her studies in early 2018 at UCOL’s Horowhenua campus, where she completed her New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills. Upon signing on as an apprentice, a generous member of the public approached TSP Construction to offer a grant to pay for Joy’s tools, for which she expressed immense gratitude.

Throughout her journey, Joy has received unwavering support from her team and employers, Todd and Natalie Strode-Penny. "Joy was the first female I employed, and I am honoured to present her with her Trade Certificate qualification," said Todd Strode-Penny.
Joy's achievement is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and the supportive environment at Greenhaven. Her story is an inspiration to many, demonstrating that with determination and support, any dream can be achieved.
